Fundamentally, career development at Noerr looks like this:

As an associate or senior associate, you will be involved in case work from your first day and belong to a team led by a partner who will be responsible for you. Our Starting@Noerr induction programme will make sure that you get to know all the relevant practical aspects of your work during your first six months, under the supervision of a tutor individually assigned to you: people, tasks, methods, "dos" and "don'ts" – in short, all you need to "get there" quickly and start making a constructive contribution.

Annual appraisal interviews, based on a structured catalogue of assessment criteria, will make sure that your partner and you discuss explicitly where you are and, therefore, what development can be regarded as feasible, desirable or already achieved. One feature of Noerr's approach is that the training of our associates and senior associates is also a matter for our partners and is not merely left to external trainers and educational institutions. This means that partners will play a substantial role in your further training measures. If you start as an associate, you can normally expect after two years to be appointed senior associate and included on the firm's letterhead. From your third year, you will usually complete your 3-4-month secondment, probably with one of our international partner law firms or one of our clients. After a further three years, you are likely to be promoted to associated partner or counsel. As an associated partner, you will share responsibility for the firm's success and increasingly manage your own cases, as well as internal teams. Promotion to counsel is of interest to proven specialists in their field who do not (yet) wish to follow the path leading to partner status, usually for personal reasons. Finally, nomination as equity partner or senior counsel follows in your eighth year. This requires an outstanding reputation both inside and outside the firm, based on a well-founded business case and successful positioning in the marketplace with a corresponding client base.

All of these steps will not only be transparent for you; you can also openly discuss which ones you find most appealing. At certain stages in your own and your family's lives, the position of counsel may be of interest to you. Even so, this will not oblige you to rule out completely the possibility of becoming an associated partner. Rather, you may wish to put it off for just 2-3 years. Key requirements are desire, curiosity about new things, eagerness for challenges, openness and a capacity for teamwork – all these qualities describe our advisors, who are composed of lawyers, tax advisors and accountants.

Additional qualifications such as a doctorate or LL.M. are welcome. A strong command of English is essential.

If you want to climb the career ladder all the way to partner, it will be important in the long term for you to specialise in one field of law. You will need to have a clear profile and to be perceived as an expert in the marketplace. Noerr will support you in this through further training both inside and outside the firm, opportunities to raise your profile (such as lectures and publication projects) and – particularly important to us – continuous feedback from your partners. Over time, your entrepreneurial thinking and actions will gain in importance. Ultimately, as a partner, you will be responsible not only for cases but also for teams. Here, too, Noerr will support you through targeted further-training modules, devoted to the skills that this will require. These will be complemented by coaching sessions dealing with specific fields of learning.

This is because all your further training measures, your secondment and the manner in which you assume responsibility from your very first day, contribute to work on the widest variety of cases and thereby establish contacts with clients at an early stage are well suited for paving your way to a career outside our firm.

Training

Therefore, one feature of Noerr’s approach is that measures to support our advisors are also a matter for our partners and are not merely left to external trainers and educational institutions. Only in this way can we prepare development programmes that are tailored precisely to our employees’ needs, are constantly fine-tuned and achieve lasting results. The involvement of our partners ensures that the right target for specialist knowledge is set and guarantees the effective transmission of know-how, including the personal management skills and experience of our advisor personalities, who are respected throughout our sector.

Outside your on-the-job training, we consider your further development to consist of two elements: your specialist expertise needs to grow constantly alongside your authority as an advisor. We subdivide your advisory abilities into personal, social and entrepreneurial skills.


 

Your specialist training will take place regularly at the location where you are based and, at greater intervals, across locations in the company of all colleagues in your field. Alongside this, external events such as conferences and seminars are designed to contribute to the development of a high level of specialisation. In addition, we want to foster your know-how across specialist fields, as well as your general business management skills. The latter will take place through lectures and workshops, mostly held locally.

In contrast, to develop your advisory skills we will form classes across locations and specialist fields. Over a period of five years, you and your class will work through seven modules in total, devoted emphatically to your personality (strengths, weaknesses, typical characteristics), your social skills (teamwork, leadership, conflict management etc.) and your entrepreneurial potential (negotiating, pitches, project management etc.). The aim is for you to develop your skills in a more reflective and deliberate manner (than simply by intuition), so that you will be equipped for the growing requirements as you deal with internal teams and external clients.

Similarly, the aim of your secondment, which normally takes place from your third year, is to make you sensitive to new perspectives and to enable you to appreciate different methods and types of logic and to surmount both subject-related and cultural barriers. You will do this by spending 3-4 months either supporting your client’s legal department or visiting one of our 160 partner law firms in the Lex Mundi network.

What happens next?
If your application matches the position, we will try to agree a date and time for an interview. That interview will normally be attended by your future superior, meaning the relevant partner from the specialist field in question, and a post-holder, either the office chief or perhaps a representative of the personnel department. If both we and you feel that this interview has gone well, we will be glad to offer you a second interview. This will take the form, initially, of a more in-depth conversation with the partner and/or the head of the relevant specialist field. In addition, we will introduce you to your future associate colleagues at this stage. We will then go out together for lunch, which will give both you and us an even better chance to find out whether we are well matched. This is because we want – and need – the members of the team to which you will belong to be able to rely on each other in the future. If this event also leads us to believe that we will enrich each other, we will be delighted to welcome you to Noerr!

Interview preparation:
You should have a knowledge of both our firm and our working environment, as well as a good understanding of the requirements of the specific position. You can find relevant information mainly on our homepage and in the job description, but other internet portals – and, not least, your own personal network – can also provide information. Above all, however, you should take the opportunity to get to know us at our internal “Noerr Practice” series of events or by visiting us at a careers fair. This will give you not only a knowledge of the facts but also a personal impression.

What are we looking for?

At the interview, we will not only discuss factual matters with you. Rather, we will want to know who you are, what drives you and what makes you tick. This is why it will be a conversation, not an interrogation. At a good interview, the time flies by – just as it does during a good conversation among friends. Are we able to get into conversation quickly and easily? Do you come across as pleasantly self-confident, while still being a good listener? We believe that the right candidate will be able to talk thoughtfully about their own personality. They will also initiate some parts of the conversation and not merely let it be led by us. They will be able to show what they like about Noerr, even if this comes only from an event that the firm has organised, an advertisement or an appearance at a careers fair. Naturally, they will also act appropriately in relation to dress and demeanour. One day, you will be the public face of Noerr yourself, and the interview will give you the chance to demonstrate that ability. You will have sufficient opportunity at the end of the interview to ask questions. We recommend that you write down all the questions that you have not been able to answer during your research and bring your notes with you to the interview. This too will be a sign of good preparation.
