What you can expect

We are glad that you are already interested in Noerr while still in training. Perhaps this means that, even now, we will be getting to know a future colleague and stimulating your passion for a specific field of law at an early stage. With that in mind, we can offer you the following entry opportunities:

  • a 4-6-week student apprenticeship from the 4th/5th semester
  • part-time work during your studies, up to first-degree level
  • work as a research assistant between your first degree and traineeship part-time
  • work at the start of your traineeship
  • a private practice placement
  • an elective traineeship placement (possibly abroad)

In whatever capacity you start at Noerr, the motto guiding your activity will be "not just there, but right at the heart". This means you will be brought into a team and able to get actively involved in working on cases: you will not be a mere onlooker jumping from one section to another. This is an offer which initially costs us time, because you will need to be given a very thorough induction. However, this effort is worth it: feedback from our student apprentices, research assistants and trainees proves that, ultimately, this approach is fruitful for all concerned.

What can you expect to gain during this period?

  • Insights into the working environment of a commercial law firm in general and the Noerr company culture in particular
  • Methodological and subject knowledge through on-the-job training
  • Methodological and subject knowledge and personal skills through participation in the Noerr Campus Jump programme
  • Initial experience of dealing with clients and/or attending court hearings
  • Scope to practise and deepen your English language skills
  • Chances to establish important contacts with potential future colleagues and superiors.

Who we look for

Noerr's trainees and student apprentices are ambitious prospective lawyers who are keen not merely to "practise" their subject knowledge but to use it to solve a problem which will always be business-related. For this reason, essential qualities are an interest in business contexts, a readiness to think outside the box and an especially well-developed ability to learn new things quickly.

To this end, we expect you to have outstanding examination results and a very good knowledge of English. A doctorate or LL.M. on top of a first degree is advantageous, and foreign experience and knowledge of other languages are very welcome.

We make the basic assumption that you will already have made efforts to familiarise yourself with our specialist fields and will know which field, or fields, you find attractive. You do not need to have made a hard-and-fast decision, and we do not necessarily expect you already to have acquired specialist knowledge. However, we do value keenness and enthusiasm – and both these qualities are usually directed at something specific.

Furthermore, since you will quickly become involved in working on cases, a responsible and independent approach will be required. Although we will be giving you plenty of guidance and support, we will also want to rely on you both as a person and for your ability to perform the tasks in hand. Only in this way can we give you the opportunity to show what you can do in the job and to gain as much practical experience as possible. For our part, this is also the best way for us to get to know you particularly well.

When you join us as a trainee or student apprentice, we see it as a chance to gain you as a potential colleague and to enable you to become accustomed to us. You should use it in the same way: find out whether we suit you and whether you like our company culture, our way of handling cases, the specialist field you have chosen and/or a specific team. We look forward to meeting you!

Training

azur Award 2014 für Referendariat und Praktikum

We have put together a special programme for trainees, which is also open to student apprentices and research assistants. Noerr Campus Jump is our way of launching your targeted training as both an expert in your field and an advisor. It gives you every opportunity to start networking intensively with Noerr's lawyers straight away. The programme, recently decorated with the azur Award 2014 for "Referendariat & Praktikum", contains the following components:

Getting on board
The structured induction programme will familiarise you from your very first day with all relevant contacts, tools and departments. We will give you a systematic overview of our practice, to enable you to get to know our whole firm's setup beyond your own team and specialist field.

Jump Welcome
You will also attend a central welcome event, where you will get to know all our training lawyers and your own fellow trainees. First-year associates and experienced partners will give you insights into a lawyer’s work, as well as our company culture, the firm's history and especially its vision and strategy. A communication session will give you a chance to reflect on your position at Noerr: your own expectations and the demands made of you.

On-the-job training
Under the supervision of a training lawyer and within a team of lawyers, work on handling real-life cases will form the core of your placement. This will also give you the opportunity to attend meetings with clients and/or court hearings and to apply and expand your knowledge in practice. Regular feedback will give you a clear and tangible understanding of your progress and learning successes.

Specialist jour-fixe sessions, subject-related workshops and "Kaiser" revision courses
You will gain additional knowledge by taking part in internal specialist further-training sessions. First, you will accompany your team at regular local meetings for staff in their specialist field. Second, you will have workshops under the guidance of experienced lawyers and external trainers to practise acquiring and presenting specific specialist knowledge, which will be relevant to you not only during your training period with Noerr but also in your upcoming examinations. We will also give you active support in your examination preparations through "Kaiser seminars".

Social events
Again and again we will encourage your networking by organising lunches, outings and other events. The idea is to enable you to get together with your fellow trainees and our lawyers both within and across specialist fields.

Noerr Campus Jump, like all our further-training programmes, is not there "just for fun" but is genuinely intended to provide professional added value. For you, it is so that your time here can be used to best effect to satisfy your ambitions and thus to enrich your personal, social and specialist skills. For us, it is so that you will support us as an increasingly well-trained worker and, perhaps, reinforce us as a future colleague. Naturally, it is our hope and intention that you will also feel well looked-after socially during this period. This is our way of encouraging you, in the end, to both think and feel yourself convinced by Noerr.

Please make sure that your application is as complete as possible. Ideally, your application should contain a personalised covering letter, your curriculum vitae (CV) and the most important certificates. The covering letter gives you the opportunity, among other things, to explain why you are interested in the position and to describe two or three stages in your CV that are relevant to the position. Your CV will be all the more readable if it is structured clearly and significant events, grades and so on are highlighted. We recommend that you compile your CV anti-chronologically – in other words, beginning with the most recent events. Please use PDF format for your documentation. You are welcome to save your covering letter, CV and certificates in separate PDFs. However, please ensure that the documents are labelled clearly (name and content).

What happens next?
If your application matches the position, we will agree a date and time for an interview. That interview will normally be attended by your future training lawyer and sometimes another lawyer from the group or team in question as well as a representative of the Human Resources Department. We think it is very important that you get to know at least one of the lawyers you will be working with. And therefore the interview takes place at the very office you applied for. If you apply for one of our foreign offices we will arrange a telephone interview.

Interview preparation:
You should have a knowledge of both our firm and our working environment, as well as a good understanding of the requirements of the specific position. You can find relevant information mainly on our homepage and in the job description, but other internet portals – and, not least, your own personal network – can also provide information. Above all, however, you should take the opportunity to get to know us at our internal “Noerr Practice” series of events or by visiting us at a careers fair. This will give you not only a knowledge of the facts but also a personal impression.

What are we looking for?

At the interview, we will want to know who you are, what drives you and what makes you tick. This is why it will be a conversation, not an interrogation. At a good interview, the time flies by – just as it does during a good conversation among friends. Are we able to get into conversation quickly and easily? Do you come across as pleasantly self-confident, while still being a good listener? We believe that the right candidate will be able to talk thoughtfully about their own personality. They will also initiate some parts of the conversation and not merely let it be led by us. They will be able to show what they like about Noerr, even if this comes only from an event that the firm has organised, an advertisement or an appearance at a careers fair. Naturally, they will also act appropriately in relation to dress and demeanour. One day, you might be the public face of Noerr yourself, and the interview will give you the chance to demonstrate that ability. You will have sufficient opportunity at the end of the interview to ask questions. We recommend that you write down all the questions that you have not been able to answer during your research and bring your notes with you to the interview. This too will be a sign of good preparation.
